Wall - Window units?
Wall or window units are room units. I don't care how you cut it they are room units and for the room they are installed in, (wall or window). Yes they come in many different Btu & physical sizes, cooling to heating & cooling. Some are Heat Pumps with & without electric heating. Usually they are package / self contained units. Their installation instructions come from your construction, the manufacturer, and the installer. Most don't require a condensate drain line as they evaporate the condensate water and some may use it as sub cooling but that's for another time.
When one installs or contemplates installing they should have the negatives as well as positives mentioned to them. Wall/Window units can be very drafty, maybe vibration from the unit, very loud, and cold. There are a lot of installation problems but the Btu's, heating & cooling, and the air volume for each room should be determined, (usually by a Manual J calculation), then the unit can be addressed.
Wall or window units are generally oversized because they are not turned on until they are needed. Example in a room that may have a 24 hour load for cooling of 4,000 Btu may very well have a 8,000 to 12,000 Btu suggested by the salesman. Note the oversize. Now that can have a humidity problem and be to cold in the room it is located. No the other rooms will not be of the same temperature as the room with the wall/window unit. The primary comfort key is "Air Circulation". A central with a supply grille in each conditioned room and operating a 24 hour day, (during heating/cooling season), is the ultimate. The supply grilles in a central unit "blow" the amount of air needed for the area and then it is returned to the unit. If this circulation does not happen in it's entirety then your comfort may suffer. Examples of disruptions are closed doors, no supply grilles in a given area, return is insufficient, and of course there are others as well.
Hopefully the above floor plan will help to get the point across.
Heat or the loss of heat can get into the walls, furniture, rugs, etc so usually a setting of the thermostat and staying there is important for a 24 hour operation. Unfortunately wall or window units are not used nor sized for a 24 hour operation.
To maintain your comfort through out your home you need 4 to 6 complete air circulation's in each room per hour. Any thing less than 4 could create stale and/or stagnate air.
